As EPA guidelines become more restrictive, water management has become a growing problem for upstream and midstream operations.  Pillar Innovations has worked alongside drilling companies to solve these problems and to assist the gas industry as regulations change.  The problems and solutions listed below are just a few examples of Pillar’s capabilities.

Problem : Pond Leak Detection

It is common practice in the industry to store frac/dirty water in refuge ponds.  A double liner system is typically used to prevent leaks.  But, what if there is a hole in the liner?  A small leak could go on indefinitely without detection.

Solution

Pillar Innovations’ Refuge Pond Leak Detection System allows for constant pond monitoring.

How it Works

  • If water leaks through the first liner, it will be trapped by the second liner.
  • As this water builds up, a level switch will turn on a pump to cycle the water back into the pond.
  • A flow meter will be installed that will monitor how much water is being pumped.
  • If enough water is being pumped to indicate a leak, an alarm will be sent via text or email to alert emergency personnel of a leak issue.

Problem : Pond Level/Overflow Detection

An overflowing refuge pond is a problem that should never occur at a gas site.  However, ponds have overflowed in the past which can become an environmental issue very quickly.

Solution

Pillar’s Level Transmitter with Swing Arm allows for constant monitoring of refuge pond levels.

How it Works

  • Pillar’s custom swing arm is installed along the edge of the pond outside of the liner.
  • The swing arm is positioned so that the level transmitter can be installed and calibrated on the surface. (No personnel need to get into the water or on a boat)
  • The swing arm is then moved into position over the pond.
  • Now, accurate readings can be reported to a PLC.
  • If water levels reach dangerous levels, a text message or email can be sent to emergency personnel to address the issue.

Problem : Pipeline Leak Detection

As water is pumped between remote sites, leaks can occur in the pipe.  If these leaks go unnoticed, flooding and contamination can become a big issue very quickly, particularly in remote locations that are not monitored.

Solution

Pillar’s Pipeline Leak Detection System allows for constant monitoring of an entire water pipeline.

How it Works

  • The above skid is designed to drop in a new or existing pipeline.
  • The skid includes a predetermined length of pipe on either side of a flow meter.
  • The elbows and pipe in the skid allow for the needed constant flow and length of pipe on either side of the meter for accurate flow rates.
  • The flow meter works in either direction, so it cannot be installed backwards.
  • A skid is placed at both ends of the water line.
  • The flow rates of each are compared and analyzed by a PLC.
  • If the flow rates do not match, indicating a leak, an alarm is sent via text message or email to alert emergency personnel.
